Note: Based on the observations from the person who wrote the report, the show will likely air on HDNet after the September 11th Glory by Honor iPPV event:
It may have been 84 degrees outside of the ECW Arena, but inside, the building was a melting pot of great professional wrestling, enthusiastic fans and no air conditioner. Tonight’s taping saw the probable last appearance of ROH World Champion Tyler Black in the ECW Arena, the face turn of The American Wolves and an injury to ROH TV Champion Eddie Edwards.
Match #1
Steel Cage Match
Steve Corino & “Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen vs. Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana & El Generico
This match marked the first time I’ve seen a steel cage match live and it was an awesome experience as all four competitors battled inside and outside the cage. Early in the match, El Generico did his running boot to Kevin Steen and he barely missed my head, fan interaction rules! The story of the match was that Kevin Steen stole the door key before the match started, which played into the end up the match. Steve Corino was the first to bleed in the match, but Colt Cabana would join him towards the end of the battle. The end came when Kevin Steen knocked El Generico off the top of the cage and to the arena floor, which lead to Kevin Steen & Steve Corino locking Colt Cabana in a modified double camel clutch while stabbing him with a fork, Colt Cabana passed out and the referee called for the bell.
Winners: Kevin Steen & Steve Corino
Match #2
Dark Match
“Tornado” Tony Kozina vs. Jay Freddie
The majority of this match featured Tony Kozina working over the arm of Jay Freddie, who seemed oddly over with the Philadelphia crowd. The match came to an end when Jay Freddie rolled up Tony Kozina to pull out the relatively minor upset.
Winner: Jay Freddie
Match #3
Tag Team Match
The Dark City Fight Club (Jon Davis & Kory Chavis) vs. The All Night Express (Rhett Titus & Kenny King) w/Austin Aries
This was a pretty entertaining match and the crowd really seemed into the Dark City Fight Club, who seems to have turned face. Austin Aries came to the ring smoking a pipe and seemingly showing no effects from the cage match the night before. The All Night Express looked good in this match, working over Kory Chavis for the majority of the encounter. The Dark City Fight Club made the customary comeback, but Kenny King rolled up Jon Davis following a pounce to Rhett Titus to get the victory.
Winners: The All Night Express w/Austin Aries
Up next was an in ring segment between Davey Richards and Shane Hagadorn, where Shane Hagadorn said he was responsible for the success of Davey Richards. Davey Richards wound up attacking Shane Hagadorn, which lead to The Kings Of Wrestling attacking Davey Richards until Eddie Edwards made the save.
Match #4
Women Of Honor Match
Sara Del Ray w/Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli & Shane Hagadorn vs. Rachael Summerlynn
This was basically a Sara Del Ray squash match, with little offense from Rachael Summerlynn, who was forced to tap out to an achilles lock.
Winner: Sara Del Ray w/Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli & Shane Hagadorn
After the match, Sara Del Ray grabbed the microphone and asked “where is my competition?”
Match #5
Singles Match
Roderick Strong w/Truth Martini vs. “The Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels
This match was a great brawl that saw tons of entertaining action from both inside the ring and outside the ring. The story of the match seemed to be that whenever Christopher Daniels would make a comeback, Roderick Strong would find a way to stop it. There was a funny moment in the match where Truth Martini was crotched on the ropes during an attempted interference, then proceeded to point as his hurt crotch while remaining on the top rope. The end came when Christian Able & Josh Raymond tried to interfere and help Roderick Strong, but the interference backfired after the referee saw “The Book Of Truth” in the ring. Which lead to the referee questioning Roderick Strong, which gave Christopher Daniels time to recover and nail Roderick Strong with the “Best Moonsault Ever.”
Winner: Christopher Daniels
There was another in ring segment featuring ROH Champion Tyler Black, Davey Richards and executive producer Jim Cornette. Essentially, Davey Richards and Tyler Black got into an altercation backstage, which lead to Davey Richards challenging Tyler Black to a match and Tyler Black accepted.
Match #6
Dark Match
Mike Sydal, Adam Cole & Colby Goodwin vs. Matt Tavern, Mike Bennett & Brandon Locke
This was a pretty entertaining match between all six competitors, albeit the match was pretty short, only a few minutes in length. Mike Sydal is not at the level of his brother Matt Sydal (WWE’s Evan Bourne), but he does show a lot of promise. Mike Sydal, Adam Cole & Colby Goodwin get the victory after Adam Cole pinned Matt Tavern with a high cross body from the top rope.
Winners: Mike Sydal, Adam Cole & Colby Goodwin
Match #7
Tag Team Match
The Embassy (Necro Butcher & Erick Stevens) w/Prince Nana & Mr. Ernesto Osiris vs. “The Littlest Lumberjack” Grizzly Redwood & Andy “Right Leg” Ridge
Six letters could easily describe this encounter, “S-Q-U-A-S-H”, as Erick Stevens and Necro Butcher easily defeated Grizzly Redwood and Andy Ridge. The end came after Erick Stevens laid out Grizzly Redwood with an Olympic slam type of maneuver for the three count.
Winners: The Embassy w/Prince Nana & Mr. Ernesto Osiris
Match #8
Non-Title Match
Tyler Black (ROH Champion) vs. Davey Richards
In my opinion, this was easily the best match I have seen since I started attending the ROH On HDNet TV Tapings late last year. These two battled all over the place and nailed each other with every hold in the book, along with all of their finishers. This could have been Tyler Black’s final ROH ON HDNet match because when this airs, Tyler Black should be in FCW on a permanent basis. Also, ROH may have unintentionally spoiled its own IPPV event because Tyler Black came out without the ROH Championship, so this match could air following the September 11th event. Although I do not get HDNet in my area, I will be tracking this match down to watch again once it finally airs. After both men hit each other with just about all of their finishers, Davey Richards got Tyler Black to tap out to the Texas cloverleaf. After the match, the Philly faithful gave Tyler Black a standing ovation, as it could be his final appearance in the ECW Arena.
Winner: Davey Richards
Match #9
Tag Team Match
The House Of Truth (Josh Raymond & Christian Able) w/Truth Martini vs. The Super Smash Brothers (Player Uno & Player Dos)
This was a perfectly fine match to follow the greatness of the Tyler Black/Davey Richards match, plus I got to see my new favorite manager in ROH, Truth Martini. Both teams looked good in this match, which was won by The House Of Truth after they nailed Player Uno with their finisher. Watching some of the tag team action tonight in the ECW Arena made me truly believe that the ROH Tag Team Division could be at its finest in a long time.
Winners: The House Of Truth w/Truth Martini
Match #10
ROH TV Title Match
Eddie Edwards (Champion) vs. “Addicted To Love” Rhett Titus w/Kenny King
This match was unfortunately cut short due to a serious hand injury suffered by Eddie Edwards during a dive on Rhett Titus. Eddie Edwards pinned Rhett Titus following the dive, but his hand was bleeding badly and he needed to be helped to the back by the referee. Earlier in the match, Rhett Titus nailed Eddie Edwards with a hard dropkick that looked like it bust open his nose, so Eddie Edwards had a bad night at the ECW Arena. Also, kudos to Rhett Titus for pulling double duty, as he also competed with Kenny King to defeat The Dark City Fight Club earlier in the evening.
Winner: Eddie Edwards
Match #11
ROH Tag Team Title Match
The Kings Of Wrestling (Chris Hero & Claudio Castagnoli) (Champions) w/Shane Hagadorn & Sara Del Ray vs. The Briscoe Brothers (Mark & Jay)
This match was a great way to end the night, but it definitely did not live up to the level of their last two IPPV encounters. Sara Del Ray got sent to the back rather early in the match after interfering, which angered The Kings Of Wrestling. The story of the match was The Kings Of Wrestling working over Mark Briscoe, who couldn’t get the tag into Jay Briscoe. Jay Briscoe eventually got tagged in and did a hell of a job cleaning house on The Kings Of Wrestling, until Shane Hagadorn interfered. The end came following the Shane Hagadorn interference, which lead to Jay Briscoe getting hit by a low blow and pinned. After the match, Papa Briscoe hit the ring and attacked Shane Hagadorn, getting revenge after he was attacked a few TV tapings ago.
Winners: The Kings Of Wrestling w/Shane Hagadorn & Sara Del Ray
Notes: The ECW Arena was packed to capacity, with a few fans leaving after the Tyler Black/Davey Richards match…The next set of TV tapings will by 10/1 & 10/2…Rhett Titus worked double duty against The Dark City Fight Club (w/Kenny King) and Eddie Edwards…The ECW Arena was essentially a sauna for the entire taping…The next IPPV will be “ROH Glory By Honor IV” on 9/11, featuring ROH Champion Tyler Black defending against Roderick Strong, The Kings Of Wrestling facing The Worlds Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) and the duo of Colt Cabana & El Generico versus Steve Corino & Kevin Steen in a Double Chain Match…For more information on Ring Of Honor, visit www.ROHwrestling.com
